Schmaltz Bar & Delicatessen

For a quick cup of coffee, a tasty lunch or a glass of wine with your friends - Schmaltz Delicatessen is the place to be. The team behind Bounir love to visit this place for lunch, a glass of wine or just a quick cup of coffee.

Schmaltz Delicatessen is located at the trendy Nybrogatan. Despite its small area, only 32 square metres, the owners have created a warm, welcoming vibe with a touch of New York and southern Europe. The menu is short, but filled with tasty sandwiches, cheeses, olives and tasty wines. Despite its small area, Schmaltz is a bar, a café and a deli - all in one.

The duo behind this place consists of Johan Agrell and Jon Lacotte. Apart from creating success with Schmaltz Bar & Delicatessen, they also own Babette, known for their pizza, and Café Nizza, a relaxed restaurant on Södermalm, famous for their tasty pasta and welcoming atmosphere.

"We are what we need to be; a lot like places in southern Europe, the owner Johan Agrell says. Morning coffee can easily turn into Vermouth based drinks or a glass of wine in the afternoon"

The name, Schmaltz, is quite different and unexpected. It is partly due to that a jewish school is located in the same building. Moreover, the owners found some inspiration from New York delis, in which poultry fat, schmaltz, is used in cooking. Interesting, but Schmaltz definitely sticks to your brain.

The duo have definitely created a space for Stockholmers that matches their desire. At Schmaltz Bar & Delicatessen, it feels like you have escaped Stockholm. The inspiration from New York’s city vibe and the calm in Southern Europe is what distinguishes Schmaltz from other cafés and restaurants in Stockholm.

"Here in Sweden, canned food is regarded as kind of an emergency food. However, this is not the case in other cultures. The inspiration comes from wine bars in southern Europe, whose menus consist ofdifferent varieties of chark and pickles. But also from the Jewish deli in Manhattan or in Vienna" says Johan Agrell.

Due to their love to pickles, they play a big part on the menu. Schmaltz serve sandwiches topped off with pickled cucumbers, salads with pickled onions and much more canned foods with a trendy touch. Everything delicious - of course.

Not only is the vibe incredibly inspiring and the food very tasty, but also the interior design. It is cozy, trendy and clean - all in one. The green leather couches, shiny black and white, checkered floors and crispy wines are very picture friendly, and therefore usually make an appearance on social media. Overall - do not miss this place for coffee or drinks in Stockholm.
